In-Car Stereo

If you’ve purchased a new car stereo and you want to fit it yourself, you might find it not to be the simple procedure you imagine. However, there are plenty of accessories available on the market to help you.

Many modern cars now have an ‘ISO’ connector for the stereo, which will one day be the industry standard used by the car manufacturers. The ISO connector is used by 99 per cent of all aftermarket in-car audio systems, therefore enabling you to replace your factory fitted stereo by simply unplugging it and plugging in the new one. However, many car manufacturers do not use the ISO connection and therefore your new in-car audio unit will not plug straight in. This is where you will require a wiring adaptor. This will convert your cars original wiring plug to an ISO connector.

Car stereo’s are a standard “DIN” size and therefore many cars have a DIN size space in the dashboard (beneath the manufacturer’s stereo). In some cars, when the factory fitted stereo is removed a portion of the dash/fascia is removed with it. This is when you will need a fascia adaptor. In-car Radio Carriage Unit

Most aftermarket Car Radio CD players will have a carriage or bracket supplied with it, this is to ensure teh required mounting points are available plus it provides the ability to insert the Audio Unit and extract it later using the supplied keys

You might also need an aerial adaptor. The aerial adaptor plugs into your cars female socket and provides a male plug to fit the new stereo.

If you cannot get a wiring adapter then below are the pinouts for the ISO Standard connector, using these you could make a wiring loom if you connect the wires from your existing unit to these.
