Remove a Scratch from a Windscreen

You have two options

1. Fill the scratch in with a resin having the same refractive index as the glass, so it doesn't show. Typically you can get this type of resin from car spare shops or check to see if your insurance company will do it for free.

2. Polishing the scratch out. This involves much hard work and elbow grease. Abrasives such as silver or chrome polish will not work and definitely no abrasive papers of any kind will work or you'll finish up with a scratch surrounded by a nice opaque patch!

The professionals use Ceria (cerium oxide) or Jeweller's rouge (iron oxide). Both of these are very fine abrasives. Ceria can be obtained from good craft shops, as it is used in gemstone tumblers. Use it as a paste mixed with water on a soft cloth, and just keep on rubbing until you are happy with the results

It should be emphasised that household abrasive cream cleaners are all unsuitable as they either won't have any effect, or they'll scratch the surrounding glass depending on how much abrasive is in them.

The choice is yours, however if the scratch is deep or long I would suggest the resin option being a better solution.
